Designed by architect Roland E. Coate, the home was originally built for the widow of a prominent businessman before eventually becoming the longtime residence of Howard Hughes.
Hughes owned the estate for more than a decade during the height of his career as a movie mogul, producing films including Scarface and Hell’s Angels. He was also a pioneering aviator and businessman who owned TWA.
The home even appeared in the 2004 film The Aviator, with Leonardo DiCaprio portraying Hughes.
As Hughes’ career was taking off in the late 1920s, he wanted a home with some very specific features: an entrance large enough to accommodate multiple cars, stone floors in the kitchen, and windows that opened but had permanent screens to keep bugs out.
He initially rented the property for $1,000 per month before purchasing it in 1929 for $135,000.
Hughes lived here until 1940, and Katharine Hepburn also spent time living at the estate with him during their relationship.
The scale of the property is just as impressive as its history.
