Friday Find: Howard Hughes’ Former Estate in Hancock Park

For this week’s Friday Find, we’re taking a look at the former estate of legendary aviator and film producer Howard Hughes. Friday Find- Howard Hughes esta…

Located in Hancock Park, the beautiful Spanish-style home sits along the 8th hole of the Wilshire Country Club, offering rare golf course views in one of Los Angeles’ most historic neighborhoods.

The estate was designed by renowned architect Rolland E. Coate and was originally built for the widow of a prominent Los Angeles businessman.

Howard Hughes owned the property for more than a decade during the height of his career, when he was producing major films including Scarface and Hell’s Angels.

In addition to his film career, Hughes was also an aviation pioneer and owner of TWA Airlines.

The home was even portrayed in the 2004 film The Aviator starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes.

When Hughes was rising to prominence in the late 1920s, he wanted a “suitable house” with several very specific features — including an entrance large enough for multiple cars, stone floors in the kitchen, and windows throughout the home that opened while still keeping insects out with permanent screens.

Hughes initially rented the home for $1,000 per month before purchasing it in 1929 for $135,000, which would be roughly $2.5 million in today’s dollars.

He lived in the home until 1940, when he moved to Texas and claimed residency there to avoid California’s high income taxes.

During this time, actress Katharine Hepburn also lived with Hughes at the estate.

Today the property offers 8 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, and approximately 10,000 square feet of living space, situated on three-quarters of an acre.

The home includes a guest apartment above the garage, providing additional living space for visitors.

Inside, the residence features a chef’s kitchen with a dramatic 24-foot island and polished brass countertops.

The outdoor spaces are just as impressive.

A beautiful cobblestone courtyard with an outdoor fireplace can accommodate up to 100 guests, creating an ideal setting for entertaining.

The grounds also feature:

• a large backyard with a pool
• a catering kitchen
• a custom-built pizza oven

This extraordinary Hancock Park estate is offered for $19,995,000.
