Hey, I’m Natalie Novarro with Sotheby’s, and for this week’s Friday Find I’m featuring the iconic Dome House. Check it out! Friday find- dome house
Located in Glassell Park, the Dome House — sometimes called the “Domestead” — was designed by Los Angeles architect William King.
The unique property offers 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and nearly 1,800 square feet of living space.
The home was originally built for pediatrician Dr. Joy Gaertner, but one of its most notable residents was artist Fritz Haeg, who purchased the property in 2000.
Haeg transformed the home into a creative gathering space and hosted an artist salon called The Sundown Salon, which featured retreats, concerts, and art events.
The tri-level home is connected by a spiral staircase and feels like walking through a piece of art.
When you enter the lower level, the space almost resembles a batcave, with natural rock walls and dramatic lighting from 15 skylights.
Next to one of the bedrooms is a small hidden hideaway, adding to the home’s quirky personality.
And sitting in the garage is a classic 1960s black Stingray, which definitely adds to the batcave vibe — though I’m not sure if the batmobile is included.
Up the spiral staircase to the second floor, you’ll find a timber-framed kitchen with beautiful views of the San Gabriel Mountains.
The dining table sits on a track system, allowing it to move throughout the space.
But the true showstopper of the house is the 24-foot geodesic dome ceiling.
Fritz Haeg painted one panel the color of the sky each day over the course of a summer, dating each piece to create a mosaic of blues.
Outside, the property sits on approximately a quarter acre and features:
• terraced gardens
• outdoor sitting areas
• a canvas dome yurt
A yurt is a round portable tent traditionally made with flexible wood framing covered in felt, and here it serves as a space for a yoga sanctuary, home gym, or creative studio.
The Dome House is just as unique on the inside as it is on the outside.
