What’s a Case Study House?

Let’s find out in this week’s Friday Find. Friday find- case study house

This remarkable property is Case Study House No. 18, also known as the West House, one of the most architecturally significant mid-century homes in Los Angeles.

Designed by architect Rodney Walker in 1948, the home sits on more than half an acre in the Pacific Palisades with unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean.

The single-story mid-century residence offers 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and approximately 1,700 square feet of living space.

Inside, the home showcases many classic mid-century architectural details including:

• soaring 11-foot white beamed ceilings
floor-to-ceiling windows
• warm wood paneling
exposed brick fireplaces

One of the most striking features of the home is the dramatic floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace in the living room, accented with copper.

But what exactly is a Case Study House?

The Case Study House Program was a groundbreaking residential architecture experiment launched by Arts & Architecture magazine between the 1940s and 1960s.

Architects were challenged to design efficient, affordable, and reproducible homes to help address the housing boom following World War II, when millions of soldiers returned home.

The program commissioned 36 houses and apartment buildings, though only a few dozen were actually built.

Today, around 20 of these homes still stand in the greater Los Angeles area, making them some of the most important examples of mid-century architecture in the world.

While the original goal of mass-produced housing was never fully realized, the Case Study program produced some of the most iconic and internationally recognized modern homes ever built in Los Angeles.

With only a limited number of Case Study homes remaining, this property represents a rare opportunity to own a true piece of architectural history.

This Pacific Palisades Case Study home is offered for $7,950,000.
